MY APPROACH

COUPLE PORTRAITS – BY A DOCUMENTARY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Let’s be honest: the words “couple portraits” can sound a bit scary. You’ve just got married, you’re buzzing from everything that’s happening around you, and the last thing you want is to be marched off for an hour of awkward posing. That’s not my style.
Think of portraits with me as a little breather in the day — a chance to sneak off together, laugh, cuddle, maybe wander into some nice light. I’ll never ask you to do anything that feels cringey or staged. No cheesy dips. No forced smiles. Just the two of you being yourselves (with a bit of gentle direction if you need it).

HOW LONG DO THEY TAKE?

This really comes down to what you want from your portraits. A typical session with me is no longer than 10–15 minutes — just enough time for you to sneak away together without missing the party.

If your venue has big, beautiful grounds or an epic sunset, you might choose to have a little extra session after your wedding breakfast too. But honestly, whether it’s 5 minutes or 15, the key thing is that you enjoy the time together and feel completely comfortable in front of the camera.

BUT I HATE HAVING MY PHOTO TAKEN!!

Honestly? Almost every couple tells me this. You’re not alone! And that’s exactly why my approach works so well.

I don’t expect you to pose like models or do anything that feels awkward. My job is to make you feel at ease so the camera almost disappears. Think of it as hanging out together, having a laugh, and maybe sneaking a moment away from the madness of the day. I’ll give you little prompts if you need them, but the best photos happen when you just relax and be yourselves.

By the end, most couples tell me they actually enjoyed it (yep, really). And when you look back, you’ll see portraits that feel natural, genuine, and completely “you” — not two people who look like they’ve been forced into cheesy poses.

LESS POSING, MORE PERSONALITY

Your couple portraits should feel like you — not like a set of awkward poses lifted from a Pinterest board. I’m not here to make you do anything that doesn’t feel natural. If you’re not a touchy-feely couple, I’m not going to ask you to wrap yourselves up in an embrace. If laughing, chatting, or simply walking side by side is more your vibe, then that’s what we’ll capture.

Because we’ll have already built up a relationship before your wedding day, you’ll feel comfortable around me — and that makes all the difference. I create a space where you can be your true selves, whether that’s sharing a tender, quiet moment or being a bit silly together.

Bring your dog, embrace the weather, practice your first dance, give each other a piggyback — whatever feels like you. My job is simply to be there, ready to capture it all in a way that’s natural, genuine, and completely personal to your story.

KIND WORDS

“I hate almost everything about photos. I hate being in them and I’m not even a massive fan of looking at them. HOWEVER, working with Erica on our wedding day was a pleasure beginning to end. She accepted the challenge with gusto and we are so pleased she did. The end results are just what we were hoping for and every one of our guests (without exception) commented on what a brilliant job she did on the day. I have no idea how she manages to be in so many different places in the blink of an eye whilst being so discreet and unobtrusive. In short, she was fantastic. I might have even enjoyed myself……..We highly recommend her without hesitation.” – Laura and James – Offley Place 2019

“When we had our pre‑wedding meetup/mini photoshoot, we knew we’d made the right choice, Erica made us feel so comfortable and we just had so much fun! On the day of our wedding, Erica was absolutely fantastic, she was so supportive and all our guests loved her. When the photos came through (so quickly!) we were blown away with how many incredible photos there were.” — Amer & James

“We were lucky enough to have Erica photograph our wedding last month. I cannot overstate how wonderful she was. Communicative in the run up, and then on the day she was absolutely brilliant ‑ captured all the moments I could have hoped for, so beautifully, including loads of fantastic candid shots that I will treasure forever. But as importantly as the amazing photographs, she was so lovely and kind and helpful on what is inevitably an intense day.” — Natalie and Duncan
“On the day itself Erica was simply amazing. She immediately fitted into the party, wasn’t at all intrusive but gave enough direction to achieve what we had spoken about. It was genuinely a pleasure to have her as part of the day. The outcome… wow! Erica’s photos are simply incredible.” — Ruth and Nick
